> Ahh yes. Ed Gien has inspired all sorts of interesting tales >and movies. I was born and raised in Wisconsin and most recently >lived in Madison. He was at the Mendota State Hospital (or some >such similarly named thing) where he was placed instead of a jail >because (if you can believe this) he was found mentally incompetent. > His grisly crimes occurred in the 1950's. He was a bachelor >farmer that killed and literally butchered people. The evidence >the police found in his house was not (ahem) appetizing. A coupla >books have been written about him if you "hunger" for more details. > Not only was Psycho loosely based on his deeds but so was >Texas Chain Saw Massacre and probably many other stories. > Discount lamp shades anyone....? I've heard that Ed was also the subject of a drive-in theater type movie called 'DERANGED'. The story I heard was that it was his life story. In fact, in the beginning of the movie, a news reporter announces that what they are about to see is true and based on fact. It's been a very long time (1973?) since I've seen it, but I do remember some grizzly scenes, such as one of his victims (the last one I think), hanging from a barn rafter after being gutted out like a deer. Has anyone else ever seen this movie? Ed has been up for parole, but needless to say, he's never been released. Bob Knipfer ihnp4!drutx!page
