From: CompuLink Wire Service Date: Wednesday, May 10, 1989 ALAMEDA, Calif. - Japan approached another milestore in its rise to economic supremacy, nearly matching the United States in total electronics production in 1988, according to a research firm that forecast a bumpy road ahead for America's biggest industry. Japan produced $250 billion worth of electronic goods - everything from computer chips to copiers and fax machines - while the United States barely stayed ahead with $262.8 billion. Dataquest Inc. said tuesday in its annual industry analysis and forecast. "This year we have seen some incredible things take place," said Manny Fernandez, president of the San Jose-based Dataquest, who called Japan's surge toward the top in overall electronics production more significant then its recent dominance of the semiconductor industry. Apple Computer passed IBM in unit sales of personal computers in the United States in 1988, Fernandez said. But the big news in the arena, he said, was the penetration into the U.S. market of Korean and Taiwanese computer makers. On a day when Apple announced new software and IBM unveiled a cheaper personal computer and a portable one, Dataquest said both companies lost U.S. market share in 1988 to foreign vendors, whose sales grew from 35 percent to 45 percent of the U.S. total. ---Contact Me----------------------------------------------------------------- My BBS: CompuLink 3/12/2400 (612) 649-1581 ProLine: rstarr@pro-hysteria Mail: P.O.
