[comp.sys.apple] Zip Chips

SEWALL@UCONNVM.BITNET (Murph Sewall) (05/13/88)

I just downloaded a file off my neighborhood bbs containing a whole "thread"
of Compu$erve discussion of Zip chips. It's probably a violation of
copyright to circulate those messages; besides, they're substantailly
redundant. In short -

1) There are ordinary folks out there receiving Zip chips.
2) They do work as advertised; one club benched marked Zip against Transwarp
and decided it's a draw (depends on what software and what it's doing).
3) Still LOTS of peope who ordered at last Fall's Applefest who are still
awaiting delivery (if you order now, don't hold your breath).
4) There's a new, similar competitor called the "Rocket Chip" said to be
twice as fast as Zip (6MHz instead of "only 4").
5) The rumored Zip-GS is still vaporware.

No doubt this "Rocket chip" will make some money even if it only did the
same thing as a Zip Chip. All they have to do is market stuff at least 4
to 5 months behind schedule and they will still probably beat all of the
Applefest orders of Zip Chips!!!

5) The rumored Zip-GS is still vaporware.

No doubt...

fred@killer.Dallas.TX.US (Fred Falk) (05/12/89)

Over the past year we've purchased about 40 Zip chips for our Apple //e's.
Within that time frame we've had about a 25% defect rate. Most of the
chips work for a few months then just *DROP DEAD*. I've spoken many times
with Zip Tech (they've replaced the chips for fredd but that's not the point),
any they keep telling me they haven't had many complaints. I've also
talked with a dealer I know he's had similar problems to mine.

Anyway here are my questions:

1) Has anyone had simialr problems?

2) I've heard about the "ROCKET CHIP" but have not had time to investigate
    them, any comments?

3) Are there any other Apple excelerators, that are 100% compatible?

Some other notes: The Apples the chips are in run about 12 hours a day with
about 30 minutes of down time within that period. Most of the chips won't boot
when the computer is turned on, or some just hang while running. I have found
one occurance where the Zip chip changed a program (I save the program then
ran the good and bad thru Copy ][+ verify). The Apples are running DOS 3.3
(I'd prefer Franklin DOS 6.0 [runs about 6% faster thant Apple], but from
early tests with the chip it causes disk i/o errors).

One other questions not related to the chip; Other than Microsoft are there
currently any other available Dos 3.3 basic Compilers (please don't tell
me to convert to ProDos it is absolutely NOT possible!).

Thanks in advance...fred

Have you tried the original Apple accelerator, Applied Engineering's TransWarp?
I've had no problems with mine so far. It's worked just fine with every piece
of software I've tried it with (whoops. All but one: ModemWorks. Supposedly,
the latest version fixes this problem...). AppleWorks just cooks, Multiscribe
is actually useable, and most arcade games are simply unplayable!

My Transwarp has also worked flawlessly for close to four years. Even
though it does take up a slot and much energy (I bought the new AE
power supply for my //e, but I do have all but one slot occupied) it is
invisible. Besides, it is much safer to remove a card than a chip
if you want to use normal mode for extended periods of time.

I posted a complaint about my Zip Chip to this list about a month ago.
I had thought that there was an incompatibility between the chip and a
program that I was running, but it turns out that the chip would work
fine for about an hour and then would start acting flaky -- Appleworks
would crash into the monitor, Kermit would hang during file transfers....

I called up Zip Tech and they said they would replace the chip for free.
I sent it back last week and am now waiting for my replacement chip.

The price on the AE TransWarp was just dropped from the list of $199.00 to
$169.00. you may want to check that out (street proce should be about $129.

In Vancouver our club purchased a number of chips and have had a 50% failure
rate. One member has had two chips fail - I have only had one fail . . . so
far.
