[comp.sys.apple] HD Speed Problem

Gus_Rivera@UB.CC.UMICH.EDU (05/13/89)

   I have a puzzling problem I would appreciate some help with. I recently
purchased Tulin Corporation's Apple // 60 MB hard disk drive kit. It came
with a Seagate ST277N, Apple SCSI Interface Card, A-hive enclosure, Ext.SCSI cable, and a power cord (for a grand total of $768 preassembled). Anyway, I
have low-level formatted the drive with HD Format with a variety of inter-
leaves (1,3,6,11,20,etc) and then high-level format it with the System 4.0's
finder. The thing is, I always get the same result with DiskTimerGS:
                            READ = 93
                            SEEK = 89
                         ADAPTER = 52
   However, according to A+ and some other sources, the timimgs are supposed
to be closer to 53, 44, and 52, respectively. I can't seem to figure it out!
Maybe HD Format is not working right, but I haven't run into anyone who had
any problems with the actual program (My buddy also bought the same package
as I did, but also got the same results as myself, so I know there's not
a defect in my HD).
   The HD is in slot seven (by the way, I have a GS), and the CP is set to
SCAN. I have 1 MB additional memory. Help!!!

 Yes I've done this and the problem is when you run the GS/OS utility it
 "initializes". You can't just do a partition without "initializing" the drive!
 It sounding like the initialization step was redoing the low level format at
 Apple's standard 12:1 interleave. After the init is complete you can partitio
n and use the drive normally. The problem is that you don't have an efficent
 interleave. I think you need to use the HD partition tool to partition the
 drive and then use something like CII+ to put prodos on it.

 Now here is where I need help. My Apple SCSI card didn't come with the
 software disk. Can someone send/tell me where I can get a partition program
 or better yet HD partition....none of the local Apple dealers have SCSI cards.

 Also is the interleave only specified in the low level format or is an inter-
 leave factor also used in the high level format when you put prodos on the
 disk?

Has anyone tried the HomeBred HD on a Laser 128EX? I've been thinking about
it, but have been trying to find someone who has already done it,
successfully, before I spend the money.
