[comp.sys.apple] Apple II tech notes

CSCARSC@BOSTONU.BITNET (Al Willis) (12/03/86)

Anyone can subsribe to Apple's Apple II tech notes now. Probably the best way
to go about it is to join the Apple Programmer's and Developer's Association.
Not only can you subscribe through them, you can also get the back issues of
the notes. They are the source of all the new GS stuff. Apple's Technical
Finally, the Apple II gs Programmer's Workshop (APW) should also be ready by
now. Yes, that means you'll be able to run Apple's gs C compiler.

My manager receives all the Technotes from Apple as we are a
registered member of APDA (something well hidden from me for over a
year). He said he has been throwing away the Apple Technotes on the
Apple II line but keeping the Mac Technotes (hes a mac lover but that
cant be helped; I like the Mac II but not the $$). Anyways, he will
be forwarding them to me from now on but what I really want to know
is, is it possible to get the lost technotes resent (he wasnt sure
and didnt know whom to check with)? Anyone? Apple? APDA?

I'll be uploading them to comp.sys.apple in a month or so. We are right now
updating all of them (some of them date back to 1983 and are hopelessly
obsolete!) and turning them into uploadable text. In the meantime, if anyone
else has the current ones in text format, feel free to distribute them.

It is nice to see some real support starting up. Thanks Keith, I'll be
eagerly waiting for those tech-notes. BRAVO!
Keep up the good work over there at Apple, let's hope this is only the
beginning.

It is nice to see that Apple is listening and supporting comp.sys.apple.

Thanks, and keep up the good work

My question is - is there any way that the Apple II (and Mac) Tech Notes can
be posted on INFO-APPLE or to APPLE-2L? There are some very good tips that
were posted last year by C. Schlicting (sp?) that were much appreciated by
our local users of Apple II series computers.

If you're listening, Apple, please let us know. I'd like to get them.

We are currently rewriting all of our technotes. As soon as that is done, we
will be converting them to text and uploading them to every place we can
think of. This should happen by the end of the month (THIS month!).

Someone suggested to me that I also post the MacWrite versions of the technotes
as well as the text formats. How do people feel about this? My feeling was that
I would post the text versions first (in BLU packed format), and then see how
the net gods felt about my cluttering up the bandways with more of the same
information, but in a different format. Remember that I'll also be uploading
the source code to our demo programs around the same time, so it's not just
technotes that I'll be bogging the system down with. All told, I'll be uploading
about 1.5-2.0 megs of stuff...

Do Apple II users really need mac write I don't know of a Apple II program
that can read them. If you want the mac version why using Apple IIs. Lets
stick to what apple users can read and understand.

Over the summer, the subject of Apple II technotes was discussed. Someone
said that they had them and would post them to the net. Is this going to
occur? Is anyone working on this?

I'm sure that many people would like to see these posted. Just wondering
what's going on...

thanks.

Has anyone seen or heard anything about Apple II Technical Notes?
Apple was supposed to mail them to developers last month in a "special
mailing", but I haven't received anything!
When I called Apple Developer Services, I was told first that I would have to
purchase them from APDA, then after I called again I was told that I was listed as an "APPLE" developer not an Apple II developer and this is why I haven't
recieved them. I don't think I believe either explanation fully.

Anyone know what's going on (I've been witing for these since this summer!!)

Well, the tech notes (in TEXT files instead of the old MacWrite format) are
up under Developer Services on AppleLink. If there's a big enough demand,
I can re-post them here (or on comp.binaries.apple2 in compressed format).

TN #0 says "We place no restrictions on copying Technical Notes, with the
exception that you cannot resell them."

If you're a certified developer, you should be receiving them free, period,
according to the Tech Note.

Don't bother posting them Scott as I will be sending them to all the Apple II
archive sites who sent me mail. If the demand is great, I could also post
them, but since it is every Tech Note (plus File Type Note) I would rather
let people get them from the archive sites and post things like Sample Code
instead. I'm the one who just finished getting the ASCII files to AppleLink,
and as soon as the mad rush of MacWorld is over I can finally get them
distributed electronically.

The mailing to Developers has been delayed since I passed them off in November.
I believe they have been duplicated and they are FINALLY assembling the
packages now. If you are a certified developer, they are coming in the mail.
If you are not certified, you can get paper copies from APDA.

Please post them here. As you said, TN #0 itself says: "We place no
restrictions on copying Technical Notes, with the exception that you
cannot resell them.".

The widest distribution ensures it gets to the people that want them
(which includes me!), and don't frequent (or access) AppleLink.

Posting either to comp.sys.apple or comp.binaries.apple2, it doesn't
matter to me. ((Note: if you do post to comp.binaries.apple2 (which is the
most logical place to post them), place a notice in comp.sys.apple that the
postings have started))

Ok, where are these archive sites? Can anyone provide me with an anonymous

The link between Boston U and MIT has been down for two+ days; so naturally,
when it got fixed today, I got a humongous number of messages (including
mucho bounced mail messages from another list that HAS to tell me
about EVERY user it can't find in 3 days if I'm foolish enough to send
a comment to it).

Imagine my delight at finding the above in that mass of mail!! (I like
Monty Python too :-).

1) the reason the Technotes are being sent to archive sites is they
ARE LARGE MAIL (I seem to recall Mark or Scott or someone saying they
   total 2 Mbytes?).

2) if you can't receive large mail, haven't access to 'ftp', can't get
LISTSERV@BROWNVM to acknowledge you exist, and don't receive
comp.binaries.apple2 then you are fresh out of luck unless you can
afford to subsribe to one of: AppleLink-PE, Genie, Compu$erve, MCI Mail,
   the Source......

Well, close, but not quite. Remember, at least until now (I havent gotten
my new APDA catalog) one can get the Technotes in hard copy or on disk from
APDA. So there are alternates. Also, at one point in time user groups
which were part of the Apple connection program received copies of the
tech notes as well . If your group isnt getting them, have someone
check this out.
