On another subject. I was surprised to see no comments at all about the recent publishing change and demise of A+. A+, IMHO, was the only magazine worth reading (It was definitely not the best, but it was the best of the worst). Recently Incider announced the 'merger' of A+ and Incider, with the resulting magazine a combination of A+/Incider. Well, I never liked the rather moronic style of INcider, so I looked forward to this day with dread. I did receive the first issue, and it was called Incider, no reference (save a little notice) to the merger. The inside was pure Incider, with a couple of articles left over from A+. Everything that was worthwhile in any way about A+ was gone, to be replaced by the incredibly 'babyish' look of Incider. While A+ projected a mature, responsible publication, Incider has alwasy taken the approach of wanting to appeal to children (at least that's what their layout looks like). Now, with this 'merger' over, I am sad to see that nothing at all of A+ was left over. It's just basically Incideer warmed over. Too bad. I cancelled my subscription the same day. A+, IMHO, was the only magazine worth reading (It was definitely not the best, but it was the best of the worst). Recently Incider announced the 'merger' of A+ and Incider, with the resulting magazine a combination of A+/Incider. I forget which magazine editor said it (I think it was Don Lancaster in Computer Shopper), but it went something like: "They merged the third and fourth best Apple magazines and ended up with the seventh best." Frankly I was appalled. I have yet to decide whether the content will suffer (conceivably in the long run it will get better, once they start using the new resources), but INcider's layout looks like something done by a novice who just discovered desktop publishing. Every column is in a different face and font, placed in a different location on the page. Irrespective of the content I find the format completely unreadable. They desperately need to get serious about publishing. I don't suppose anyone can forward this message to them (Are they on AppleLink or anything? Then I could just cc this to <whatever>@applelink.apple.com.) What say the rest of the community to this? What I want back is SoftTalk, but in the meantime I'll keep subscribing to A2-Central (formerly Open-Apple) and Computer Shopper. -kee Home: obsolete!nazgul@bloom-beacon.mit.edu Work: nazgul@apollo.com BBS: obsolete!pro-angmar!nazgul@bloom-beacon.mit.edu or nazgul@pro-angmar.cts.com (somewhat slower though) 617/641-3722 (300/1200/2400) -------

> On another subject. I was surprised to see no comments at all about the > recent publishing change and demise of A+. You must have come in late. There was PLENTY - over a month ago when the merger first took place. It's amazing, and a little amusing, how many people join this group and post messages as if the World was created only yesterday. We really need an archive. Um...you mean the Bitnet needs an archive. For the Internet, I quote
from our "welcome to info-apple" message:
...
Info-apple archives are maintained on Milnet host
simtel20.army.mil, which allows anonymous ftp using the "anonymous"
login name and the "guest" password. On that host, the most recent
archives are stored in PS:<ARCHIVES.APPLE>APPLE-ARCHIV.TXT. If you are
not on the Internet, there is at present no direct way for you to obtain
the archives.

Yeah, inCider is a little babyish, but there are two very good reasons to read it. First, although some of its articles are a little dippy, they do cary a lot of information about the Apple II field. No only do they do reviews like A+, they also publist an occasional program or two, and some times have some very good information. There about the best general purpose magazine around. This brings me to my second point - there about the only general magazine around. Sure, there's Nibble, but in trying to shift from only programs to programs & other articles, they only managed to loose half the magazine (including the spine - never did figure out where that went). At least inCider has a spine. Okay - no Apple magazine I know of has the thickness of something like Byte or Personal Computing, but at least there still are Apple magazines. My phisophy is to have a subscription to all of them - that way I don't miss anything. -- jstich@pro-avalon UUCP: crash!pro-nsfmat!pro-avalon!jstich ARPA: crash!pro-nsfmat!pro-avalon!jstich@nosc.mil INET: jstich@pro-avalon.cts.com

I was surprised to see no comments at all about the > recent publishing change and demise of A+. A+, IMHO, was the only magazine > worth reading.... There accually was some discussion on the net (you must have missed it). I was involved and I seem to remember it was more of a sigh than a rally cry. I have enjoyed A+ more than any other mag. (may it rest in peace) and I was sad to see it go, but the "big bucks" just weren't there any more so, they bailed out. > Recently Incider announced the 'merger' of A+ and Incider, with the > resulting magazine a combination of A+/Incider. > > ....'babyish' look of Incider. I haven't followed Incider much, so I can't judge. I bought one copy when I first got my //e. I didn't like it then, but I'm willing to try it again. > Too bad. I cancelled my subscription the same day. It's too bad you cancelled. Because: a) Incider is still supporting the Apple II's (ie. A+ isn't any more.) b) I intend to continue reading/buying/exploring my Apple ('s //e & //gs) so I need a mag. that supports it. c) If you don't subscribe to "something" you'll loose touch. > What say the rest of the community to this?
