[comp.sys.apple] GETTING KERMIT385 to "EXEC" on Apple IIE

ucoerp@sw1e.UUCP (1897]) (06/02/89)

I have a problem I hope someone on the NET can help me with. Last night I
downloaded the 2 files for KERMIT385 from the comp.binaries.apple2 group.
The files downloaded fine, using Ascii Express Professional (DOS 3.3
version) on an unenhanced Apple IIE.

Once I had recieved them, I followed the instructions embedded in the "REMarks"
of the first file (app385.1) to "EXEC" the file to get a runnable version
of KERMIT385. Although it appeared that everything worked when I ran "EXEC
APP385.1,R25" after it completed there was nothing on the disk but the
original app385.1, app385.2, and the hello files.

What did I do wrong??????

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP???

		THANKS

Although you don't say what sort of host you downloaded from, I'd guess it's
likely that the host's file storage ends each line with CR/LF. In Apple
text file format, the result is that EVERY line appears to begin with a
LF and that's enough to FUBAR the EZ Install. There are an assortment of
"stripper" utilities around that will purge the unwanted LF's, but of course,
if you don't have one it's going to be hard to get one to you unless you
can get Kermit to work :-( <Catch 22 - 'cause if you use Kermit, you don't
have the surplus LF problem> Perhaps your host has an option or utility
that'll eliminate the LF' (also make sure that none of the lines in APP385.2
are "padded," that is have a null or blank character added to either the
ends of lines or as filler in the event of a blank line).
