[comp.sys.apple] Anyone thought of homebrew GS yet?

ralphw@ius3.ius.cs.cmu.edu (Ralph Hyre) (06/09/89)

I read in one of the last A+'s that the Apple Video Overlay card
has the GS graphics hardware in it. (plus the other neat stuff, obviously)
Has anyone thought about the possibility of trying to see whether
one could fool any commercial software into thinking it was running on
a GS by plugging a 65816 (and a linearly addressed 1M memory card, like the
AE or checkmate auxiliary slot products) into a //e, along with the GS card?

Obviously you'd need a way to put most of the GS ROM in your //e, and you'd
probably need a year to figure out what needed changed in the Toolbox, and
so on. So, you'd run into copyright restrictions.

There's no financial incentive either, since you can buy a real GS for less
than the cost of the components needed.
