SEWALL@UCONNVM.BITNET (Murph Sewall) (06/10/89)
Seems Brown has steadfastly refused to update their LISTSERV from version 1.5n to 1.5o (they may be the last LISTSERV on BITNET to be running 1.5n) for reasons which are beyond me (and Chris Chung too, I guess). Princeton, PUCC, has switched to 1.6a which turns out to be compatible with 1.5o but not 1.5n. Attempts to distribute APPLE2-L seem to be reaching LISTSERVs in New England only (which excludes the Internet because files for Internet sbscribers are being routed to Princeton to lower the load on CUNYVM). Files for subscribers South and West of Yale must pass through PUCC, which for the moment, is dumping them all into the 'bit bucket' and sending Chris and I a terse message which approximates a 'Bronx cheer.' (spelled: Bzfsstt in Calvin & Hobbs :-) In an apparently unrelated problem, Harvard has been bouncing files mailed to Paul Nakada for posting to comp.binaries.apple2. I've remailed them to another address I have for Paul, so perhaps things will continue to reach comp.binaries.apple2 (no guarantees). Now that crisis has struck and extremis has been reached, Brown plans to update their LISTSERV software, BUT (I thought only taxpayer supported institutions got caught in fiascos like this one) the LISTSERV maintainer at Brown is scheduled to attend an out-of-town conference next week and doesn't want to install new software and then go off for a week hoping there'll be no problems (that's prudent, of course, but if he'd updated to version 1.5o TWO MONTHS ago when other LISTSERV maintainers told him Brown's obsolete version was starting to cause problems... 20/20 hindsight?). The short version is, LISTSERV@BROWNVM will be upgraded on, or shortly after, June 19 after which APPLE2-L should begin to flow again (meanwhile, maybe Chris, Paul, and I can figure out why Harvard.edu is bouncing mail for the account that's used to cross-post to comp.binaries.apple2).
