[net.movies] Resist the "Impulse"

jab@uokvax.UUCP (09/30/84)

I just saw "Impulse," which is a movie that stars Tim Matheson and Meg Tilly
(from "The Big Chill").

You may not want to read further, unless you want to know
how bad this movie really is. If you read the following before
seeing the movie, and then send me "hate mail" because I spoiled
the plot, I will tell my computer to tell your computer to move
the "^P" sequence to something that you can't type, and you'll
have to power-cycle your machine to reboot.

Boy, is it bad. There is this cute girl and this [can't make judgement] guy
who go to the girl's home town after her crazed mother has tried to kill
herself. (Crazy! The old lady calls the girl on the phone, long distance,
just so the girl can hear the gunfire.)

The people in the town are all a little strange, and progress from "civil"
to "murderous", passing through "psychotic" along the way. Even Matheson's
character begins to act, umm, on his "impulses". (Everyone does, so it's
okay.)

It turns out that there is a toxic waste spill contaminating the water supply
that supplies the local dairy, causing everyone to behave like someone from
"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". (Tilly's character does drink milk, since
it "puts on weight".) The movie ends with the townspeople being killed by the
government, to keep the news from getting out.

Here we have two excellent performers in a dreadful film. I don't know WHAT
went wrong (script? Yeah, it WAS pretty bad) but whatever it was, the person
responsible should be fed some of that milk.
