Aptly named; it's a 'gateway' for other systems (similar to UUNET on the
East Coast) to UUCP and the World. I gather that individuals can also
subscribe (acquire an account for a fee) and read USENET.

Portal is a public access BBS with access to USENET, and is reachable through PCP (a service of TeleNet). It costs $10 a month, lets you read and post to USENET, has meetings (like conv on UNIX), several SIG groups, and is really quite reasonable.
