This is primarily to Bob Paster, who requested info and help about Kermit 3.85. It may be of use to others, too; it's not terribly private. Bob, The reason I couldn't mail you back is because our mailing system here at the University of Illinois is full of holes when the sysops are supervising. Now that they're gone over the summer, it went to hell. I can't get anything through to you, and I couldn't post here earlier because I had to reconstruct my .cshrc file from scratch AND remember what directory 'ex' is in here to be able to post. Sorry for the wait. The following text is in response to the mail you sent me. =============================================================================== What may be wrong is your APP385.2 file. I never stripped the beginning text. It may require that garbage to still be there. Also, the last line of APP385.2 must be a SOLE <cr>. Sometimes when you download a line with only a carriage return, the comm packages on both ends add a space before the <cr> In order for the EXEC to work, be sure the last line in APP385.2 is ONLY A CR. I've found that byte counts are pretty unreliable. I'll check byte counts, and get either a perfect file or a corrupt one, regardless of the accuracy of the byte count. If you continue to have trouble, E-mail me again. I'll send you a ShrinkIt archive of the disk itself. Which is significantly easier to unpack than two interlocking EXEC files (ack!) I had trouble with these files, too. I finally, after the third try, got it to work. When you EXEC APP385.1, it will tell you "process beginning," or something to that effect. You don't have to do much, just sit and answer questions when it asks. It BSAVEs the kermit files by itself. All you have to do is, after it says it's finished, BRUN KERMIT385. It's all automatic. Regardless of success or failure, mail me back when you get results. Ken. krb20699@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu ============================================================================== Instead of mailing me, you could respond here. Our mailer is very jumpy, and I couldn't guarantee your message would get through. Ken. krb20699@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu

Bob Paster, Do you have ShrinkIt? If so, I can post a ShrinkIt archive of the disk on comp.binaries.apple2. If you don't, I can mail you a disk with Kermit on it (disk are 19c nowadays...pleeze) and some packers, if you wish. The reason I'm posting here is that our mailer does NOT recognize your address. If you could give me your BITNET address, I would be pleased. Apparently, when I mail to uccorpb@sw1sed.UUCP (from memory) it belches on me, saying "Service Unavailable." I've had another request for a mailing of Kermit v3.85 on a disk which I'll honor when I get the person's US Mail address. BTW, your messages get to me, but not vice-versa.
