[comp.sys.apple] //c problems

rdlanctot@instr.okanagan.bc.ca (Ryan Lanctot) (02/23/89)

I'm no expert on the //c or anything, but it sounds like your IWM chip
(Integrated Woz Machine) is bad. These babys cna be had for approx. $20
US funds. There are several companies in Computer Shopper (Pre-Owned
Electronics, etc.) which sell the chip. But, The problem is, if I'm
not mistaken, that the IWM is soldered in.........

 Fustrated //c owner!!!!!!!

I own a //c with 2 5-14" disk drives, Prometheus 2400G modem, and
a 768K Z-Ram II card. Until a short while ago, my //c gave me 3.9
years of trouble-free performance.

Then, it happened. I would be going along, copy some files, when,
CRASH! I/O error. After that crash, blocks would be unreadable,
and it would not be in the same pattern. Reading a disk is AOK,
but writing, well.....

The test which I used to check out drives was to use Prosel's Cat
Doctor and Copy II Plus Version 8.3 to copy all the files from the
internal drive to the external drive (and vice versa) on a new
disk. (Yes, I tried different disks from different manufactuers,
same problem)

Anyway, here is my tale of woe with the dealer. . .

1st time into dealer - Checked out drive with diagnostics. Said it
was AOK and charged $25.

Myself - Crash.

2nd time into dealer - Swapped old, 3.9 year old logic board with
brand new logic board. Ran diagostics, said it was OK. Charged
$173 (that includes $25 discount from previous repair).

Myself - Crash. Decided to run Z-ram diagnostics to see if that
card was ok. It was.

3rd time - Cleaned disk drives, ran diagnostics and bit copy, said
it was ok. Charged $50, but charge was revoked after discussion
with owner (who is a good friend) and technicians.

Myself- Crash. Ran Z-Ram diagnostics all night. Crash.

4th time - No, thank you. Swore that they checked out the system.
Blamed ram card and software. Asked me to try it out on another
system.

//gs owner - Program ran AOK.

Myself - Removed Z-Ram. Same problem.

//c owner - Ran program on his machine. It was ok. Plugged my //c
into his power supply and monitor (maybe monitor was causing
problems). Crash. Plugged in his 5-1/4" external into my //c.
Crash. (And I forgot to plug in my 5-1/4" drive into his //c.
Grrr.)

"My friend the hacker" - Full disk copy OK. Diagnositcs OK. Drive
speed well witnin specs. Copy files....Crash. Sprayed some item
which chills chips, then copied files. Crash. Swapped the internal
and external drives, that is, my internal drive was connected
which my external usually sits, then copied files. Crash. Removed
external drive and hooked up Disk ][ drives with adapted. Copy
files from internal to "external" Disk ][. AOK. Copy files from
Disk ][ to internal. Crash. Removed internal drive and hooked up
another Disk ][ Drive. Copy files from "internal" Disk ][ with
"external" Disk ][. OK. Copy files from "external" Disk ][ . AOK.
We know what the problem is. It's in the drives.

5th time into dealer-Swapped internal drive's analog card with new
analog card, retained old drive mechinism. *PERSONALLY* ran the
copy files test myself. Crash. Swapped drive mechinism, retained
old analog card, ran copy files test. Crash. Plugged in new drive,
new analog card, and, to boot, a new cable between logic board and
drive. Crash. Technician wants to start drinking now. I go home
with my //c with old drive and old card.

Any ideas? If you need to call me at work, please call between
