[net.music] Clapton, Page & Beck on MTV

jwr@ccieng5.UUCP ( James Walter Reid) (05/31/84)

Hey!

Jimmy Page & Jeff Beck on MTV tonight.
The Ronnie Lane Benefit Concert Part II.
Simon Phillips on drums.
"Stairway to Heaven" among others.

Part I was O.K.
Clapton, Winwood, Watts, Wyman, Kenney Jones, Ray Cooper, Chris
Stainton etc.
"Cocaine", "Lay Down Sally" etc.
Good stuff.
Part II should be better though.

Check it out if you can...

Jimmy Page invented the word "sloppy." Although I do like much of
his music and guitar playing, there was no excuse for the slop that
he played on MTV.

By the way, Jeff Beck was pretty good. Simon Phillips played a few
nice things on drums, but he seemed to play too much straight time.
I was a little disappointed in Fernando Saunders (seeing as though
he played in the One Truth Band w/John McLaughlin).

(oo)
Steve Winwood made them ALL look bad. Wow!
