GREETINGS!!!!! I am looking for a good desktop publishing program that will run on a Apple //c with a 768K Z-Ram II and 2 5-1/4" disk drives. I am about to become a communications secretary for a volunteer support group for a non-profit public TV station. The number of pages will range from 2 to 10 pages. Any suggestions? -- Mark A. >I am looking for a good desktop publishing program that will run on >a Apple //c... Too late for your purposes I suppose, but Broderbund demonstrated the "New" Print Shop (beta copy -- due out in, they hope, October) at our Club last night. LOTS of *neat*! improvements (multiple graphics per page, up to four fonts per page, up to 9 foot by 6 foot posters, etc.) including incorporation of what's now in the Print Shop Companion (also supports color and runs on //e, //c as well as IIgs). Oh yes, important point - it'll reproduce older graphics but it's internals and new graphics disks have MUCH better resolution. Back to the original question :-) The NEW COMPANION (due next January or so) will be an Apple 2e, //c, IIgs 'desktop publishing' package. No beta demo on that one, so I can't begin to compare it to Publish-IT! However, I've always been impressed by the quality of Broderbund's software (Carmen San Diego series, and Bank Street Writer as well as the Print Shop stuff). > looking for a good 8-bit desktop publishing program
I would go for Publish It! 2 (which utilizes extra RAM). You'll need a mouse
or joystick though... considering all it does, it's not too slow either.

Although I can't speak from experience, you could look into Springboard Publisher and GEOS. I think GEOS has a DTP application. They might be incredibly sluggish, as DTP programs for the II are wont to be. Dave Seah Twinkie & Banana Club - MA

Network Comment: to #7223 by obsolete!pacbell!sactoh0!mholtz%ames.arc.nasa.gov I think the best one for the apple II series is PUBLISH IT! 2. It's become a very popular program and is well written. It runs on the //e (enhanced), //c and GS. proline: pro-novapple!daveharv uucp: crash!pro-novapple!daveharv arpa: crash!pro-novapple!daveharv@nosc.mil Internet: daveharv@pro-novapple.cts.com DIALCOM: 164:NVC100 Northern Virginia Apple Users Group >pro-novapple< 703-671-0416/300-2400 baud

Network Comment: to #2336 by pnet01!crash!ames.arc.nasa.gov!pacbell!sactoh0!mholtz I have tried Personal Newsletter, Springboard Publisher and Publish-It! Personal Newsletter is awkward, at best, and is quite limited in what it can do. It was nice when it was all alone, but now it is clearly exposed as what it really is: second rate. Springboard Publisher is a snail. Even run on a IIgs on "fast", it is almost unbearable. I cannot imagine what it would be like on a IIc. Publish-It is incredible. It leaves the other programs in the dust. Version 2 will support extra memory (not sure about the Z-RAM) and do lots of neat goodies. It is truly WYSIWYG and is reasonably fast. If there is sufficient memory, it will load in and become less disk-dependant. The printer drivers are excellent, and output is sharp, tight, and readable. Publish-It will also support a laserprinter. There are a few things that should be improved, but even as it is, it stands in a class by itself. <does it sound like I like this program?> Publish-It, by TimeWorks. By the way, I have been using Publish-It for about 6 months now. I have no affiliation with TimeWorks, its dealers or distributers. Network Comment: to #8680 by pnet01!crash!pro-generic.cts.com!sb Publish It 2 does work with Z-Ram (RamWorks) cards... I've got a friend who updated to it so he could use his extra memory on the IIc (Z-Ram card).

Network Comment: to #4409 by pnet01!crash!csd4.milw.wisc.edu!mailrus!ulowell!m2c!wpi!dseah I understand that Publish It! or Publish It!2 are extremely good DTP programs. Publisher is very sluggish, even with an accelerator. Publish It! seems to be "state of the art" DTP for the Apple II series.
