[comp.sys.apple] Programming Languages on the II

lipo@vms.macc.wisc.edu (Patrick Lipo) (06/23/89)

Greetings.
I am new to the Net and to programming the II and am wondering
if anyone out there has any recommendations for good compilers
for my IIgs. I would like to look into versions of C, Pascal
and assembly. Thanks.

If you're looking for a good Pascal, and soon (If not already out) 'C' compier
for the GS, take a look at Orca. It's worked out nicely for me.

I have been using the integrated version of TML Pascal for several
years now and I have been reasonably happy with it. They have
recently announced TML Pascal II which will support GS/OS version 5.0
and provides a resource editor. It is suppose to be available in
July, so I would wait for that version (it costs $49.95 to upgrade
from previous versions).

We used ORCA and APW for awhile, but now we use MPW Cross Developement
on the Mac. I've heard that TML Pascal is pretty good, but I wouldn't
know.

Also, if your programs need speed, go with assembly. While it is possible
to write a really fast compiler on this machine, it is really painful and
it hasn't been done.
