BOSTON COMPUTER SOCIETY ANNOUNCES VIDEO OVERLAY CONTEST Starting May 6, 1989, the Boston Computer Society, in conjunction with Apple Computer, Inc., will sponsor a contest to find the most creative uses for video overlay. Winners will receive an Apple II Video Overlay Card, and may be included in a future Apple video on the Video Overlay Card. With Apple's new Apple II Video Overlay Card, Apple IIe and IIGS owners can now superimpose Apple II graphics on video from a VCR, videodisc player, or video camera. Example applications for video overlay include highlighting or annotatin g instructional video materials (e.g to teach physics, geometry, or a language), visualization (e.g. superimposing a graphic house on a video property background), or home creativity. The contest will run from May 6 to August 31, 1989. Entries should be in written form and include a descriptive title of the proposed project, an equipment requirements list, and a brief (less than 500 words) project description, focusing on how video overlay will be used. Supplementary materials (e.g. graphic storyboards) can be included with the entry, but are not required. A BCS panel of judges will select the top 25 entries based on how well they meet the following criteria: 1) Example shows a COMPELLING use of overlay (i.e. results could not be achieved as effectively in software or video alone) 2) Example shows an INNOVATIVE new use of overlay (i.e. no duplication of examples shown on the User Group Connection quarterly video segment on the Video Overlay Card released in April) 3) Example demonstrates some form of POSITIVE SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION (e.g. educational or community service uses) Winners are required to submit a videotape to the BCS one month after receiving the Video Overlay Card showing the work they've done to complete the project. (Winners will also be asked to sign a standard release form allowing Apple Comput er to use their video for promotional purposes.) If the project involves videodisc, a videotape can be recorded from the output of the Video Overlay Card during a sample videodisc "session." The contest is open to all members of official Apple User Groups and Apple Computer Clubs. Members can submit as many entries as they like, and there is no limit to the number of entries per User Group or Apple Computer Club. All entries should be postmarked by August 31, 1989, and mailed to : Video Overlay Contest c/o Boston Computer Society 215 Hartman Road Newton, MA 02159 ----------------------------------------------------- Feel free to send e-mail to me for more information or whatever.
