[comp.sys.apple] Things relating to sys 5.0

SELLSWORTH@HMCVAX.BITNET ("Scott, part time fuzzy") (07/08/89)

Hello peoples. I have three sys 5.0 related questions.

1. Is it easily available? All of the "authorized dealers" tell me to wait
until "September at the earliest, but more likely october or november." The
mail order houses claim to not know what it is, and all of my local developers
have moved away. Is it on Applelink perhaps? Or is there a kind person who
will mail it?

2. Do the new drivers justify getting an apple SCSI card? I have a CMS card
at the moment which works, but it would be kinda nice to get all the speed out
of the little monster that I can. Put another weay, are the advantages of
having an Apple card and any new drivers worth the hundred bucks it would take
to get one?

3. Is there now or will there be soon a version of Applelink software that
will work with System 5.0? I discovered recently that the GS software would
not work with 4.0. Sigh.

4. Unrelated question: Has anyone heard os any plans to integrate the new
features of Sys 5.0 (like new calls and resource managers) into Orca pascal?
I ordered TML 2 mostly because I did not want to muck about with
undersupported products.

  Thanks for your time.

System software is copyrighted and commercial. Mail order houses probably
will NOT carry it at all (do they carry System 4?). Although it was
announced at AppleFest (and some beta versions were around for display
purposes), Apple hasn't announced an availablility date. Some rumors say
August, but your dealers' estimate of September is probably reasonable.
If you keep reading this list, you're likely to know within hours of official
release.

Don't look for it on AppleLink, if somone mails you a copy it's likely to
be one of the beta versions that was "liberated" at Applefest (known to have
bugs that can do wonderful things like scramble the file directories on
your hard disk).

The word from Apple is "this summer". This fall is not this summer. I have
no reason to believe that they will not make the summer goal.

This one's up to you - you might get an Apple SCSI card and then decide in
a few months that you want to buy the brand X super-SCSI card with its own
drivers and hardware acceleration. I would think that if you're not plainly
dissatisfied with the current setup, it's not justified to change it.

Huh? It always worked under 4.0 for me.

How is this unrelated to 5.0 (or did you just want us not to notice you said
"three" at the top?) :-)

New calls get "supported" by creating new interface files. I believe Byte
Works has said that they are planning an interface upgrade when 5.0 becomes
available, but I have no more details. I personally don't believe either
TML or Byte Works products to be "under supported" - TML is diving back into
the GS marked full steam, and Byte Works continues to give excellent online
support on both GEnie and AppleLink - Personal Edition.
