[comp.sys.apple] GS Font pak's

shatara@memit.dec.com (Chris Shatara) (07/08/89)

I recall seeing a set of "Font Pack's" for multiscribe-GS from STYLEWARE.
Is this package still around? Has it gone to Beagle Bros? Are there
other Font pak's around for the GS.

I have Multiscribe GS and with the exception of NewYork 9point, don't care
for most of the fonts for most correspondence. Shaston, Geneva, etc
look quite childish when printed out even when selecting BETTER TEXT.

Any suggestions?

Font Library was a StyleWare product, and the package now lies in Beagle's
hands.

Well, I tend to agree. One thing you might try when using fonts, when you
are printing in better text, it really helps if you have the same font in
couble the size; i. e., if the doc is in Geneva-12, the output looks better
if you also have Geneva-24. The Print Manager uses the doubled font to take
advantage of the better resolution of the ImageWriter (or Epson). The
screen resolution is pretty lousy, all told.

Actually, you might try printing with the "condensed" option set. Since the
fonts were usually designed for a 1:1 pixel aspect ratio and the IIgs really
has a 5:12 ratio (in 640 mode), a 50% vertical reduction results in a 5:6
ratio, which is a lot closer to square. "Condensed" is actually a signal
to some printer drivers (LaserWriter included) to print the text "normally."

I know that Medley 2.0 (when released) will stretch all your artwork on the
screen when you select condensed printing, so you have full, stretched control
over it on the screen yet it comes out "normally" on paper. I think AWGS
has capabilities to handle condensed printing as well.

There are enough public domain fonts for the IIgs (usable by Multiscribe,
etc.) on AppleLink PE (in the Word Processing Forum Library) to fill a
10 meg hard disk. As you would expect, some are pretty dopey, but others
are excellent.
