There was some mention back about backup methods for hard disks. In the Mac world, they have lots of tape backup systems but not too many in the Apple II world. Well now, it looks like, relief is in sight. In the latest issue of the newspaper, II at Work, there's an announcement from Applied Ingenuity, Inc. about software they will be selling that will allow you to backup on your VCR (VHS or BETA) up to 240 megabytes onto one tape. Just plug their cable into the Video In and Out connectors of your VCR and run their backup software. Two different types of backup are available: the high-speed image mode backs up or restores the entire drive, and the file mode backs up or restores specific files. You can check the quality of the tape before using it, and for extra data security, multiple copies of your data are stored. To increase security even further, you can ask for more copies of your data to be stored on the tape. An audit log keeps track of all backup and restore transactions along with dates and times performed. This could be a real help to people, like myself, that are now backing up to 3.5" disks, where a 85% full, 20 meg hard disk requires about 23 disks. It's not too clear if this software is applicable to all hard disk drives or written just for the Inner Drive that they manufacture. I would suppose it's only for their particular drives. I imagine there's a plug on the controller card that you hook the cable to. In any case, it sounds interesting and worth investigating. Error rate 1 in 10^19 bits. High speed search. For DEC, IBM PC, and NOVELL LAN... although, I don't know if they have some- thing for us Apple users.
