[comp.sys.apple] Help!! Fried GS

Subject: Help!! Fried GS

I have a buddy with a Apple gs. He apparently ran a static charge through
the joystick port and now the gs thinks the Open Apple key is on all the
time, even with the joystick unplugged.

His friendly neighborhood Apple dealer offered to replace the
motherboard for only $212.00, but I suspect that someone in netland can
suggest what may be wrong, (ie what chip, maybe?) and suggest a cheaper
fix than the Apple dealer.

Any takers?

Thanks a million.

Kurt

Are you sure thathis is what happened? I had the same apparent problem just lastweek, and it turned out that the ADB connector on the back of the computer wasn't making contact with the keyboard cable. All I had to do was wiggle the cable a the problem went away. Maybe you should try this...

If it's not the ADB thing suggested, then $212 sounds cheap for a motherboard
replacement. To find the suspect chip(s) and replace it seems hard, since
I believe all the components are soldered directly into the motherboard, or
soldered and maybe glued in place in the case of the surface mount components.
I wish I could get one outright for that price.
