Does anyone have some basic code to get the modem to pick up the phone, answer
it, and adjust to the right baud?

Assuming it's a Hayes compativle modem, what's wrong with just entering
terminal mode and sending the modem ATS0=1 (answer on the first ring;
the modem will autobaud detect within it's range -- a 1200 baud modem won't
adjust to 2400 :-)

Have you tried using Modemworks? That program will help you with whatever
you want to do in Basic while working with a modem.
