I would like to submit my comments on this adaptation of Charles Fuller's Pulitzer Prize Winning "A Soldier's Play". After seeing the play, off Broadway, at the Negro Ensemble Company Theater in the summer of '82, I wasn't sure about a movie version. To my surprise,I was filled with the same emotion that I felt the first time I experienced this work! For those of you who aren't familiar with the story line, I'll give you a briefing. The setting is 1944 at an Army base in Louisiana. A Black Sargeant is killed mysteriously and the movie is about the investigation of his murder. The investigation is carried out by a Black Capt.(Howard Rollins, remember "Ragtime") who seeks to find the murderer. As he probes into the death, he uncovers many facts about the emotional struggles between the Sargeant and his men. Back to my comments-I loved it!! Anyone seeing it will learn from it! For any other Charles Fuller fans, if you liked this one, read "Zooman and the Sign". Michelle E Byrd AT&T Bell Labs West Long Branch, NJ
