SEWALL@UCONNVM.BITNET.UUCP (06/04/87)
As far as I know, EXECUTIONER should work fine on a 2+. I have not tried EXECing it under DOS 3.3, but I suspect it would cause the kind of crash you describe if I did so - it IS a ProDOS program. I downloaded my copy from INFO-APPLE on Bitnet apparently without ASCII/EBCDIC translation problems, but between the Arpa-BITNET gateway and the ASCII to EBCDIC (perhaps to ASCII again translation if you use a VAX), gremlins may have been introduced into your version. At least some copies of the program get delivered with "echoed" lines. I've tried EXECing one of those and did not have a problem with a system hang, the program reported an Error (in upper and lowercase which suggests that you do need an upper/lower case capability on your 2+).
spgspros@CLARK-EMH.ARPA (06/17/87)
could someone please send me a copy of the executioner!!!
spros at clark-emh.arpa
thanks jimmyDICKSON@HARTFORD.BITNET.UUCP (06/21/87)
I came into this just after executioner was distributed, I guess. Could someone
tell me what it does and why, and perhaps send me a copy? Thanks in advance,
Bill
DICKSON @ HARTFORD.BITNETburton@SILVER.BACS.INDIANA.EDU (Rex_Burton) (06/22/87)
i would also like a copy. whatever it is it sounds good. BURTON@SILVER.BACS.INDIANA.EDU thanks Rex
ernst@AFIT-AB.ARPA ("Thomas J. Ernst") (06/26/87)
Please send copy of subject program to ernst@ssc.afit.arpa Thanks
DICKSON@HARTFORD.BITNET (06/26/87)
In response to my request, Grant Delaney was kind enough to send me a copy of
Executioner. Unfortunately, it suffered severe injury on the way here. If
someone on BITNet would send me another copy, I'd be most grateful.
Thanks in advance,
Bill. (DICKSON @ HARTFORD)DICKSON@HARTFORD.BITNET (06/28/87)
I got it (thanks M. Sewall), so if you were about to send it, thanks, but no need. Bill.
mol@dutesta.UUCP (Marcel Mol) (06/30/87)
I also would like to have a copy of the Executioner.
Can someone send it?
Perhaps it better to send one to this newsgroup (again) because
of the large amount of requests.
Thanks

------------------------End of Document------------------------

I agree entirely with your message about posting large program files.
That's the very reason why I do not intend to post the Chameleon (70K)
but will send it to anyone who asks (so far 3 requests).
There is a problem posting Executioner's 6-byte encryption (I tried it
once so I've first hand experience). The program starts each encrypted
line with a period ('.'). That confuses some mailer machines into thinking
they are instructions of some kind (since mailer uses a period to identify
command lines in routing). When I encrypted a program, the lines starting
with a period were "echoed" (duplicated without the period) to all bitnet
users and apparently, (from mail I received) a number of others as well.
You posted the Executioner source, and you presumably have Merlin (I
don't). Possibly you could compile a version that uses, say a '+' as
a leadin character for encrypted lines?
The 4-byte encryption doesn't cause the problem, but it's not as compact.kamath@reed.UUCP (Sean Kamath) (07/29/87)
Hello, world.
OK, I was reading the net earlier today, and I saw once again a request
for EXECUTIONER to be modified to use something other than a '.' to
start a packed line. As it is, I decided to use a '#'. The reason for
this is that it is a standard character for a comment, and as far as I
know all mailers allow this character through, as well as not acting on
it. If I am wrong, then let me know and I will give you a one byte
patch to change the character to anything your little heart desires.
The reason I didn't post a one byte patch this time is twofold. A) I
know people are going to want EXECUTIONER posted again, so why not post
one now with a patch? B) To show that indeed the posting could be
assembled. Now, granted, I spend an hour modifying the posting to
assemble, which for some reason got munged.
If you wish to assemble that posting, you must selectivly change all
{space}{space}; sequences to a single space. Then look for all the
macros and make sure that there is *no* space between the variables.
I.e.:
macro var1;var2
Finally, change the "uses /hard/merlin . . ." to whatever. If you have
all of merlin, you will have sendmsg.s.
Oh, and remove the '#' in the line that is labelled LINSTART. And
remove the rest of the line that says ***merlin format*** or whatever.
It's funky. Since Glen Brendon wrote Merlin Pro, he's probably got a
suped up version that is nicer than the rest of ours.
My next posting will have the execable.

As it is, I decided to use a '#'. The reason for >this is that it is a standard character for a comment, and as far as I >know all mailers allow this character through, as well as not acting on >it. If I am wrong, then let me know and I will give you a one byte >patch to change the character to anything your little heart desires. To save further post on this topic here are a few thoughts. First, since the requests will surely come, the lead "." character can be changed to anything you want with the following: BLOAD EXECUTIONER,A$2000,TSYS POKE 9923,ASC("+") : REM where + is the character you want BSAVE EXECUTIONER,A$2000,TSYS. Sean's choice of the "#" is a good one and should not cause any problems, but then the "." should not have either... Thanks Morgan (!pro-sol!mdavis) for posting the source code. When using Executioner for posting to the net, please use the 6 bit mode. It provides the least expansion and eases the load on the net. Also, PLEASE test the file before you post it. Errors do happen and the short extra step of testing the executeable file will ensure that only good programs are posted. Lastly, try to avoid lengthly programs or those that have been recently posted. There has been much repetition on the net the last month or so. If you are a new reader, you might want to ask if a file has already been distributed before you post one of your favorites. If it is lengthy, offer it through mail as Mr. Sewall (sewall@uconnvm.bitnet) recently did. --- Larry Colton {ihnp4,pyramid,qantel}!ptsfa!pbhyd!lc Pacific * Bell San Diego

Can someone out there send me a copy of the EXECUTIONER program? If possible,
e-mail to me.

Does anyone have a way to extract 4-bit Executioner files on something other
than an Apple? I would like to be able to do this either in Unix or MS-DOS.

Could anyone tell me if the file of Executioner at brownvm is correct?
I've tried twice to upload the file Apple2-l 87-00137 and upon execution
I get an error. The program seems to unpack just fine until it begins to
write itself to disk. It beeps and spits out a line of code usually ranging
in the E000 area. I have tried to unpack the file under Prodos and Dos 3.3
but I get the same results. Is there another version of this program on the
net? I have an Unenhanced ][e. I've gotten Blu to unpack, though it also
ran into problems.
I suspect it's all been explained about, but is the AppleNet program
usable on a ][e?

> Could anyone tell me if the file of Executioner at brownvm is correct? Unless something's happened to it recently, the file is ok at BROWNVM (which doesn't mean that it arrives on your ProDOS disk in the same condition). >I've tried twice to upload the file Apple2-l 87-00137 and upon execution >I get an error. The program seems to unpack just fine until it begins to >write itself to disk. It beeps and spits out a line of code usually ranging >in the E000 area. I have tried to unpack the file under Prodos and Dos 3.3 A common problem with The Executioner is padded lines (one or more trailing blanks on the code lines and especially in the line before the BSAVE command which *MUST* actually be 'null' <two carriage returns in a row>). Did you download with Kermit (Xmodem sometimes is a source of unwanted LF characters) and is the file stored on your host without pad characters (IBM hosts have 'F' and 'V' formats; 'F' causes trouble - 'V' *usually* won't)? Don't even try to unpack under DOS 3.3, the Executioner is designed for ProDOS. If you ended up with a 'B' file under DOS 3.3, you can try copying it to ProDOS and changing the filetype to .SYS with a typechange utility (will work in *theory* :-). Just in case - you DO have enough space left on the disk and you're not trying to exceed 50 files in a ProDOS 8 root directory are you?
