I have just recieved GS/OS (or System 5.0, whatever you want to call it) and have run into a few snags. First, the documentation states that it needs 512k in order to run without the network. I have a 512K GS in my office with a Unidisk 3.5 drive, an Apple 3.5 drive, 2 Apple 5.25 drives, an Apple Monochrome monitor, and an Apple 20sc hard drive divided into 2 partitions, which are 9 and 10 meg, respectively. After I install System disk 5.0 to a 3.5 inch floppy with all the necessary drivers, (Yes I know about the short disk space problem and will be attempting to reinstall Monday), I reboot the system and get the message not enough memory for the Finder and come back with error 0004. I then go into the control panel to see how much memory I have, and I come back with 511k! I proceed to remove all my desk accessories and reboot, but I still have the same problem. I reinstalled the cache NDA and boot System Disk 4 (without networking) to check the amount of RAM I have reserved for the cache, and it says 0K. I thought next that since my hard drive was partitioned into 2 logical drives, I would do a low level format of the drive using the SCSI Hacker (Yes I backed up the first partition of the drive, which have all my applications and yes, the client's data which I was attempting to convert to MesS-DOS was backed up on a seperate set of disks). After the low-level format, I then set the partition to a 20mb partition using Apple's SCSI Partition software. While SCSI.Part shows the drive as 1 20 mb partition, the Advanced Disk Utility for System Disk 4.0 only shows that I have 19 mb available. So, my questions are thus: 1) what is an error 0004? 2) why does the control panel CDA show I only have 511k instead of 512k and 3) why does my 20SC only show I have 19mb available even after I did a low level format and repartitioned the drive with Apple's SCSI partitioning software for the IIe? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Randy S. Miller Data Services technician Follett Software Co. McHenry, IL 800-323-3397 x215 rs.miller@pro-harvest fsc@pro-harvest
