[comp.sys.apple] Addresses.

info-apple-request@brl.arpa is a person (Brint Cooper)

info-apple@brl.arpa is a robot (mail list distributor)

LISTSERV@BROWNVM (at Brown University in Providence, R.I.) is another
robot, but it handles lots of lists and, properly instructed,
does many of the same things that Brint has to do by hand -
like adding or deleting you from one of it's mail lists.

APPLE2-L@BROWNVM is a robot working for LISTSERV@BROWNVM - it's another
         mail list distributor.

If you send messages to a list distributor (info-apple@brl.arpa or
APPLE2-L@BROWNVM) the robot just sends a copy of your message to
everyone who subscribes to the list. If you have an inquiry for the
person managing the list (Brint Cooper at info-apple and Chris Chung,
whose address is CC004019@BROWNVM, for APPLE2-L), posting a message to
the list is an error - presumably Brint and Chris read the lists, so
your request PROBABLY will be acted on, but it's less certain than
sending it to the correct address.

Some of the mail software appears to have been over-automated. It's
clear that some folks have a bad habit of hitting the "reply" command
without considering the address the reply will be sent to (it's not
always where the message should go).

I am trying to send mail from a Proline site to Portal in Telenet. Anyone
know of a method to route it there?

It seems to me I have seen 'portal' in return addresses (is portal in
the UUCP map perchance). A better place to ask address questions is

I got through to Bob. I used ucoerp@sw1e.UUCP. Every previous time, I
used this same address. I had tried writing a personal not straight from a
notefile with the 'p' option, but the same address gave me a 'service not
available' error. Or, of course, I may be going nuts.
I got the Kermit v3.85 EXECs from husc6.harvard.edu, and I'll convert
them and mail them to Bob as soon as possible. I work from 9to5, so it may
be as long as last time. )=
