[comp.sys.apple] More Hard Disk Woes

bh1e+@ANDREW.CMU.EDU (Brendan Gallagher Hoar) (08/06/89)

This is driving me insane.

Equiptment.

1.75Mb GS. Apple Rev C SCSI Card. 41 Meg SCSI HD. GS/OS 5.0.
AppleDisk 3.5 off the Smartport.

(The release of 5.0 that was on AppleLink for 4 hours before someone noticed
that is wasn't supposed to be there).

I format, test, format, test, partition, initialize, test, etc the HD and
it always looks fine. Sometimes I have to partition it twice because
HDSCPARTITION only partitions 2 20Meg volumes instead of 2 20.5Meg volumes
(which can be created with ADU).

Interleaves I have tried are 1:1 and 1:2.

I usually have NO problems until I either try to install GS/OS on the drive,
or try to copy the files /System.disk/System/Fonts/Fastfont and
/system.disk/icons/finder.icons to the HD. Those file WILL copy fine to other
media. No matter what blocks those files occupy on the HD, there is at least
one block that is clobbered for each file, and sometimes more.

Even if I copy those files using ProDOS 8 v 1.8 (haven't tried older versions)
they get clobbered.

There have been times that I've been able to copy them, but after a few accesses
those files are clobbered.

Also, if I use GS/OS for a while with the HD, it starts getting other block
errors. ProDOS 8 MLI ERROR $27. GS/OS errors $8002 (finder) and $0002
(Installer) and Read Failure (DiskTimer GS).

I think thats pretty much the complete information.

Whats going on?

I would suggest an interleave of something like 10:1. 1 to 1 and 1 to 2 are
way to compressed for the SCSI port on an Apple //. They actually go slower,
as the track has to revolve further before the CPU is ready for more data.
But that will not necessarily solve your problem...yet it would be something
to try, if you have not tried it.
