[comp.sys.apple] Problems with GS/OS\ProDOS1.8 and such...

bh1e+@ANDREW.CMU.EDU (Brendan Gallagher Hoar) (08/07/89)

As always, this might be something going on JUST in my system...

As before, I've said that if I copy /system.disk/fonts/fastfont to my hard disk
the file gets clobbered some how. This doesn't happen on other media. It
happens with GS/OS 5.0 and ProDOS 1.8. It also doesn't happen with any other
files on that disk, except sometimes /system.disk/icons/finder.icons.

It also seems that the index block is the one that always becomes clobbered.
(ProDOS can't READ_BLOCK)

FINALLY, I've had another file do it. It happened on the index block too...

Maybe I should just switch back to ProDOS 1.7 and see what happens...

I've brought the HD over to a Mac SE and formatted it with CMS SCSI UTILITIES,
tested it, restested it, ran SCSI Evaluator on it, and had no problems.

One of the tests is a test that does this.

seek block n, read, write, read, seek 0, seek n+1, read, write, read, seek 0

etc...no problems...

Maybe its the SCSI card, or maybe its my GS, but my GS passes its self-test.
And the SCSI card is rev. C. Besides, the SCSI card wouldn't just be
killing index blocks. (After the index block get clobbered, other clobbered
ones may show up later, even though the drive passes media verifies on the GS
previously)

The date on my PRODOS file is 19-jun-89 for both dates.
