If you are interested in approaching modern music,
the most appropriate course might be performance. By way
of analogy, when I first began listening to Bach, I found
him unapproachable. It was only after I began to play his
music that I truly began to appreciate him for what he is,
the only significant composer civilization has produced to
date. It is my belief that one of the reasons you hear so
much modern music today is because musician pick what they
play, and modern music is fun to play--even if it isn't fun
to listen to.
