Gee, I would have expected to find this here before it showed up on my local BBS. -----------------------------Original Message-------------------------- MOVED OVER BUSINESS WIRE AT 8:18 AM EDT, MONDAY, JULY 17, 1989. Contact: Janet Male Regis McKenna Inc. 415-354-4427 NEW APPLE IIGS SYSTEM SOFTWARE NOW AVAILABLE CUPERTINO, California--July 17, 1989--Apple Computer, Inc. announced today the availability of new system software for Apple IIGS computers. Apple IIGS System Software 5.0 is the first 16-bit operating system for the Apple IIGS that operates over the AppleTalk network system. It provides easier access to network services and greater speed, performance and ease of use for both individual and networked users. The software was introduced and demonstrated at the AppleFest tradeshow in May. "The Apple II customer is important to us," said Jean-Louis Gasse, president of Apple Products. "The new Apple IIGS system software demonstrates our continuing commitment to provide improvements that enhance the Apple II computing experience." Apple IIGS System Software 5.0 replaces both System Software Version 4.0 for the stand-alone Apple IIGS and AppleShare IIGS WorkStation Software for networked IIGS systems, providing a consistent graphics interface and high performance for both the individual and networked users. Developers Enthusiastic About System Software 5.0 Leading Apple IIGS software vendors are excited about Apple's new IIGS system software and the benefits it will provide to customers. "We're very happy that Apple continues to invest in software that improves the capabilities of the Apple IIGS and makes the IIGS an even more attractive choice for home and education users," said Stan Roach, vice president and general manager, Activision Presentation Tools. Craig Copley, manager of advanced development at MECC, publishers of World GeoGraph and Calendar Crafter, commented, "The increase in speed across the system is impressive. The system software has been thoroughly examined and modified with efficiency and performance in mind. Apple has also added several internal and interface features that really help with the implementation of applications. The AppleShare Aware Finder and local boot option are also really nice. Now the IIGS can take full advantage of being on an AppleTalk network system." Steve Carlton, AppleWorks GS product manager at Claris, commented, "The ExpressLoad feature and faster screen redraw routines of System Software 5.0 are particularly impressive. The ability to create accented and special characters directly from the keyboard -- something particularly important to customers working with legal and math symbols and other languages -- is also a great addition." Features and Benefits of the New System Software The new Apple IIGS system software provides easier access to the AppleTalk network system. The network system uses existing AppleShare software on a Macintosh file server and enables users to network their Apple IIGS computers with each other and with Apple IIe, Macintosh and MS-DOS computers. Apple IIGS System Software 5.0 provides a platform for new network-aware applications that take advantage of the native- mode operating system. Because it is compatible with ProDOS 8 and ProDOS 16, users also have full access to all existing network applications. In addition to operating on the AppleTalk network system, there are several other new features of Apple IIGS System Software 5.0. Toolbox improvements enable the system to handle basic functions like sound, drawing, scrolling, drawing, fonts, menus, dialogs, window manipulation and memory management about twice as fast as System Software Version 4.0, so the user experiences a more responsive Apple IIGS. New Toolbox components for developers make programming for the Apple IIGS easier and faster. Additionally, developers who use the new Expressload development tools will offer users dramatic improvements in program loading speed. An improved SCSI manager provides faster communication with hard drives and CD-ROM drives, and an improved AppleDisk 3.5 driver provides quicker access to 3.5 inch disks. The new system software also enables faster switching to and from ProDOS 8 applications and comes with a new graphics-based Control Panel. System Requirements The stand-alone Apple IIGS System Software 5.0 user requires an Apple IIGS with 512K RAM, ROM version 01 and one 3.5-inch disk drive. (The Apple IIGS has shipped with 512K RAM since March, 1988.) Networked systems require Apple IIGS computers with at least 768K RAM, ROM version 01 and appropriate LocalTalk cables. Price and Availability The Apple IIGS System Software 5.0 package includes three 3.5-inch disks containing system and set-up software and system tools, as well as two manuals: the Apple IIGS System Software User's Guide and the AppleTalk Network User's Guide for the Apple IIGS. The package is currently available from authorized Apple dealers for a suggested retail price of $49 in the United States. Customers who purchase Apple IIGS computers on and after July 17 (today) will receive System Software 5.0 software and manuals free of charge. The new software and manuals are also available to customers who subscribe to the Apple Software Update Program. Information about this program is available from Apple Education Dealers and Account Executives. Although many users will want the new manuals that come with the System Software package, Apple is also making the software available separately from licensed user groups and licensed on-line services. -30- Apple, the Apple logo, Apple IIGS, AppleTalk, Macintosh, ProDOS and IIGS are registered trademarks of Apple Computer, Inc. Does it really take Apple legal 48 hours to decide if a press release is "news" rather than a forbidden "commercial announcement?" I don't recall seeing anything from Apple on these items. Documentation will be available through APDA as soon as it can get out the door in a usable format. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt Deatherage, Apple Computer, Inc. | "The opinions expressed in this tome Send PERSONAL mail ONLY (please) to: | should not be construed to imply that AppleLink PE: Matt DTS GEnie: AIIDTS | Apple Computer, Inc., or any of its CompuServe: 76703,3030 | subsidiaries, in whole or in part, Usenet: mattd@apple.com | have any opinion on any subject." Okay, now that System Disk 5.0 is actually shipping, could somebody "in the know" post the APDA order numbers for the new Toolbox Updates and the Resource Editor? Are they avaliable yet? How much wil they cost? Enquiring minds want to know! Jonah
