This implies an easy solution for owners of older //GSes. Apple could
introduce a new board-level memory expansion product that would plug into
the memory expansion slot. (Maybe allowing 'dasiy-chaining' of other
third-party expansion boards, depending on the mechanical situation inside
the case.)

If cloning worries are that great, the board could even have a soldered-in
ROM. (My UniDisk 3.5 controller board does, why would anyone want to clone
that?) [Personally I think unsocketed components are more evil than
copy-protected software, but the industry is ignoring me.:-(]

BTW, I am leaving the net Friday, and don't know when I will be back
(I'll have to see what my next employer thinks, otherwise it looks
like I'll need a modem and some UUPC software. [I always wanted to
write my own news reader:-] {suggestions for software and hardware welcome})

I guess I'm glad I didn't buy a GS before now, but on the other hand
I don't think I'll need one for a while. System 5.0 and the Apple //naiGS
(new and improved GS) [what's the real name?]
