Charles, A //GS is more than capable for anything you want to do. That goes for yourself and your child! I have had one since it's first ship. I use it both for work (I'm a support engineer for Digital Equipment) and for home with my 8yr old son.It helped with his Abc's,math, spelling etc.. It is also used for games (yeah! ).. Now as for what you might need, well that really depends on how you want to go with it. I have a 60meg hard drive, 2megs of memory, one 3.5 and one 5 1/4" drive,2400 baud modem and a printer. I would think that that would be a great setup, and feel that if anything you might want a 30 meg drive instead of the 60 that I have. For speed if you wnat you could go with a Transwarp card by Applied Engineering (although I'm not crazy about their support, but it is getting better) or Zip Chip GS (if they ever ship). I do not for 1 MINUTE regret my purchase of my //GS!! Not even with the all those Atari's, Amiga's adn Ms-Dos machines out there. I do hope and pray that_ Apple get off their butts and let the Apple// team give me a faster //GS with SCSI,but other than that they support us just fine! I hope that you do purchase it soon. I would wait for the REVISED GS to hit the stores though. It will come with 1meg of memory and tools in ROM.. Most of all have fun and learn with it.. Joe (typed on the fly by a human...:-))
