I downloaded LIST, toted as a nifty P8 file viewing program. It seemed to successfully unpack, and even starts up on my Apple //e (on hard disk). However, after putting up its title screen with a small window in the middle (which said something about pressing R to reread disk, etc.) it crashed into the monitor, leaving me with this tiny little window, but no chance to list any files. The docs look like its a neat program, so I'd like to get it to work. I have P8 v1.4. Is there something obvious I'm doing wrong (or not so obvious)??? Can anyone help?? I'm not sure that this is your problem, however, it IS a problem with LIST. -- Bob _________________________ Pro-Graphics 201/469-0049 __________________________ UUCP: crash!pro-graphics!bobl | ProLine: bobl@pro-graphics InterNet: crash!bobl@pro-graphics.cts.com | CServe: 70347,2344 ARPA/DDN: crash!pro-graphics!bobl@nosc.mil | AppleLink: Graphics3D ___________ ____________ Raven Enterprises - 25 Raven Ave. Piscataway, NJ 08854

BobL@pro-graphics reports: > I've found that if you have a directory larger than 250 files, > [ProDOS8] LIST will crash into the monitor. I'm not sure that this > is your problem, however, it IS a problem with LIST. Why didn't you TELL me??? (Perhaps you were afraid I'd check my shareware registration list and not find your name on it... 8-) I honestly wasn't aware that LIST had this bug - at one time it would correctly trap an excessively long list of directory entries and give a warning to the user that only the first 167 entries (or whatever number would fit into the available memory) would be displayed. If the user needed to view a file past the 168th entry, they would have to explicitly enter the full pathname. I don't know why this error trap and warning stopped working and I will have to do some digging to find and fix this. (I use LIST all the time, but none of my subdir's have more than about 100 entries, and it took me a while to set up that many entries in order to duplicate this problem.) I'm told that the spectacular crash which occurred for one particular user when LIST was launched was found to be due to the use of The Desktop Manager as a program selector. I do not have access to TDM and consequently cannot do much right now to find nor fix the problem, other than to instruct people to avoid using TDM when launching LIST. (Small consolation, of course.) I would like to inform everyone that I have been making some improvements to ProDOS8 LIST, one of which is the ability to correctly display AWP files generated by AWKs 3.0, which allows new printer commands etc. Currently, LIST will display garbled text on AWKs 3.0 AWP files which have these commands; however, LIST should not crash. Another important improvement is that I was able to find and fix the bug which some users experienced whereby LIST would incorrectly give a '$40 Bad Pathname' error when the user stopped viewing one file and went to list another. (The problem was due to a memory conflict between the storage location for the pathname of the current file, and certain disk drivers, and only a very small percentage of users had hardware configurations which exhibited this problem.) I'm holding off on this release until I got some more changes incorporated. So, please send in your bug reports, or better yet, send in those shareware checks. (I know for a fact that there are alot more than ten people out there using LIST on a regular basis.) Thanks!
