[comp.sys.apple] Basic question

FRIEL%MEGASU.SPAN@STAR.STANFORD.EDU (Liam Friel) (09/05/89)

Hi,

basic question time. I hope this is the right place to ask this question.

We have an Apple Laserwriter IINT attached to a uVAX running VMS 4.7
We use a commercial printer symbiont to talk to it. The printer is rated at
8 pages/minute. We want to use this printer to give us fast, hardcopy printouts
of realtime experimental data.

If we send 20 1-page files to the printer ( ie 20 jobs ), it takes about
26 seconds per page. However, 1 20-page job takes about 8 seconds per page.
Since our experiment produces about 1 page of data per 16 seconds, the first
case is a no-no. But naturally, we want to look at our data as soon as it's
gathered, so we don't want to store data up for bigger print jobs either
if it can be avoided.

We have tried the same thing on an LN03 with DEC symbiont and the same thing
happens - lots of 1-page jobs are dead slow, 1 big job is fast.

Is there any way we can approach the rated maximum speed on the laserprinter
while retaining the one-page-at-a-time approach ?

Please reply to me directly, as I don't read this newsgroup.

Thanks in advance,
