In article <8909040300.AA26232@trout.nosc.mil> bevans@pro-oz.cts.com (Brian Evans) writes: -It was a little disappointing when I found out -what an FTP site really was. Therefore, the introduction of an FTP site -for the good of all by apple last month, really meant nothing to myself -and my fellow users who are very keen on this conference. -Internet: bevans@pro-oz.cts.com Proline: bevans@pro-oz To which Doug Gwyn replied: || ||I don't know why. As an InterNet site you should be able to access the ||files by FTP (one of the basic InterNet standard protocols). || ||Personally FTP is what I prefer. I already snarfed some tech notes ||that for some reason my APDA subscription failed to obtain for me. ||It's a great service! || ||----- End of forwarded messages However, pro-oz.cts.com is not an Internet host. It merely has a registered domain-style address. It is not on the internet. The significance of the name "pro-oz.com" is that there is an Internet host (in this case, nosc.com) to which the e-mail actually goes. The mail gets to pro-oz by means outside the TCP/IP world. In fact, it could even be a UUCP connection. Therefore, Brian Evans is correct. FTP sites do nothing for him. _Brint
