[comp.sys.apple] Help needed with QUADLINK

cchao@hplabsb.HP.COM (Chia Chao) (09/12/89)

Greetings,

I have been looking for a way to run Apple][ programs on my IBM AT clone.
A local dealer offered me an used QUADLINK board from QUADRAM with no
documentation nor software for $50. The board seems to be pretty old--
1983 is the date on the board and it is no longer carried by QUADRAM. I am
wondering if there is any QUADLINK user on the net care to comment on its
compatibility and where I might be able to find documentation and other
support?

Thanks in advance

I have not actually used one, but once had a chat with a game developer
who owned one. The Quadlink does a 40 COLUMN Apple II+ (no provision
for 80 column card, modem, etc). Aside from game playing, it's mostly
a handy device for copying text files from MS-DOS to DOS 3.3 (I doubt
there's any chance that the card can be convinced to boot ProDOS).

I suspect some sort of PC sofware is essential to activate the card
(so that the IBM disk drives will read the Apple II format). If you have
one of those AT 1.2 Mbyte drives that has trouble formatting an MS-DOS
360K disk, you may have little hope of even reading a (140K) Apple DOS 3.3
disk.

I recommend you ask the dealer to stick it in one of HIS AT's and show you
that it works (an alternative would be to tell him you'll accept $50 to
take it off his hands :-)

I believe QualLink remains in business, but I would hardly be surprised to
discover they no longer support that product (the old "Gee, our last Apple
II technition left our employee several years ago" routine).
