[comp.sys.apple] Problems with version 7.2 of ProSel-16

JDA@NIHCU.BITNET (Doug Ashbrook) (09/15/89)

I recently upgraded from ProSel-16 version 7.1 to 7.2 on my //gs and
have run into some problems. I hope that my experiences will help
others avoid the same problems. If anyone is a friend of Glen Bredon
or knows of an EMAIL address for him, I would appreciate their
forwarding my comments to him.

One of the most noticeable differences in version 7.2 is that you are
*FORCED* to reboot after you sort any (sub)directory from the
UTILITIES section. This isn't too bad, but when I sorted the root
directory of the boot volume on my hard disk, the disk was trashed.
It was so bad that even the VOLUME REPAIR section could not put it
back together again :-( Well, you ask, I did have a backup didn't I?
The answer is "Yes, but ...".

The big BUT was that I had never noticed the statement on page 26 of
the documentation that people with only a 1MB memory card should use
the option that causes BACKUP/RESTORE to use only 400K of memory.
When I upgraded to GS/OS 3.0, I noticed that BACKUP would give me an
insufficient memory message when I booted from the hard disk. I was,
however, able to run ProSel-16 by booting from a floppy with GS/OS
2.0. Consequently, I assumed that it was a ProSel bug related to
GS/OS 3.0. My mistake.

Every time I began restoring my hard disk (a Chinook CT-40) from the
backup floppies, I would eventually get the message "$54 DISK ERROR
.." while writing to my hard drive. This happened at different
locations, but was usually after reading 6 or 7 of the 3.5" disks. I
feared that my hard disk might actually be damaged, but I was able to
"zero" it from the Finder and verify all blocks. I eventually
restored as much as I could, created the remaining subdirectories,
and then used the selective restore option to restore the remaining
files.

I now have the parameter set to partition my backup disks, but I do
not relish another test of attempting to restore from backups made
this way. Has anyone done a restore from version 7.2?

Another minor, but annoying problem with sorting subdirectories in
7.2 is that the cursor key moves the file names whether or not the
Open-Apple key is pressed. A bypass is to use the mouse to move
around instead of the cursor.

My final observation is that the INFORMATION DESK section sometimes
gets error $2E when attempting to catalog the AppleWorks 3.0 Startup
disk (on 5.25" disk). Once it starts reading, then it seems to
continue OK.

All in all, I think the ProSel is a great product and would highly
recommend it. It does, however, seem to have a few bugs (but I dare
you to show me a program that does not).

Doug,

I don't know exactly what is causing your problem, I have been
using 7.2 for the last few days and I haven't had any problems. I have
sorted many directories on my hard disk at work and some floppies without
a hitch. The problem with the cursor moving the files no matter what sounds
like your open-apple key is always being pushed. Do you have a joystick
connected? (Since oa is the same as button 0) If you do, try unplugging it
and see if that solves that problem.

I have not used the backup/restore function yet, so I can't
help you there.

By the way, I just checked Compu$erve and Genie, and he is already
up to version 7.4. The man never stops!!

Why don't you try to send Glen Bredon mail yourself. His acct# on
Compu$erve is 72245,636. You could send him mail by the Gateway.
I beleive that you are on internet by your mailer line,
so as Murph Sewell has described previously, you have
to send the mail to the following address:

             72245.636@compuserve.com

If you need to send it from Bitnet (for whatever reason), you would
use the following address:

             72245.636%compuserve.com@saqqara.cis.ohio-state.edu

This does work. I sent mail to my account on Compu$erve
and sent a message back.

That should get you right to him. You should get a quick response
because I have been on a few times recently and he replies promptly.

Good Luck and let me know how you make out,

In the words of Glen Bredon "DO NOT USE VERSION 7.2"

As you found out the hard way, it has a serious/fatal bug
in the sort routines.

It was found and quickly corrected in version 7.3. Since then another
"minor" bug was killed and as a result the current version is 7.4....

Anyone with 7.2 is advised to burn it quickly, and replace with
7.4

Glen has also indicated to me, that he will soon have an update to
Apple RX that will be able to handle extended files.
