Comment to message from: microsoft!brianw@uunet.uu.net (Brian Willoughby) Another point that most folks are overlooking is that a component-level repair (paid for at dealer prices, mind you) sends you back out the door with a warranty on one (probably fairly inexpensive) part. If something else is wrong, and you need to return to the dealer for more service, you're back to square one. With Apple's policy, you may pay more for the initial repair, but you go out the door with a full warranty on the entire board. With dealer service charges running about $50 (and up) per hour in this area, I don't think I'd want to be making too many trips to the shop. (And heaven help you if you've got an "intermittent" problem!) Realistically, no service policy (with the possible exception of immediate swap-out of the entire unit, at no charge) is going to please everyone. No matter how it's done, someone will have a story to show that some other system would have been better/more efficient/less expensive.
