[comp.sys.apple] Apple II WP prog for Kindergarten exist?

HENKLE@OSHKOSH.WISC.EDU ("Doug Henkle, UW Oshkosh") (09/16/89)

We just got a question from a kindergarten teacher asking if there were any
inexpensive programs for the Apple II which could be used to introduce 5
year olds to word processing. She saw a demo for a very nice program by
Sunburst, but at $100.00 it was not an option. I use WordPerfect and
AppleWorks on my IIe but they are also too expensive. I am somewhat
familiar with the public domain FrEdWriter, but the version I got from the
Big Red Apple Club runs under ProDOS and requires knowledge about
pathnames, which might be more than 5 year olds could grasp. Does anyone
know about a cheap low-level program, possibly a simpler DOS 3.3 version of
FrEdWriter or a menu driven program, that would help a kindergarten teacher?

The Bank Street Writer (Broderbund) should fill the bill. My 13 and 14
year old daughters have been using it since they were 6 and 7.

Spinnaker Software used to (probably still does) publish some pretty good
early reading readiness and storywriting software (pictures with room
beneath them to "write" captions).

My daughters also used the game "MasterType" to learn the keyboard. I think
it's still for sale. Kindergarteners who are ready to learn about word
processing should have not difficulty with the beginning typing lessons.

Seems to me that Spinnaker Software (or somebody) had a wp called "KidWriter."
Does anyone out there know more about this?

I believe there was also something for the IIgs that was a TALKING word
processor for kids.

KidWriter is put out be FirstByte along with several other talking
educational s/w packages (spelling, math, first letters/words, etc.) They
are quite simple and have limited features, but are very user friendly. The
versions I have are came out under ProDOS 16 and will not work under GSOS
sys. disk 5.0. I heard somewhere that the series is no longer supported,
but I don't know that for a fact.

Thay all talk, however, they use the sound chip, (not digitized sound like
Reader Rabbit), so they are hard to understand and it takes some getting
use to.
