An answer to a question about "Ragtime":
In the end, the protagonist (his name eludes me) tells his comrades to leave
in the car provided by the police. They get away because one of them is white
and he drives. The police are looking for a black driver.
Back at the library the protagonist goes through some moments of indecision and
decides to not blow up the library and himself. As he is exiting the building
with hands raised, the police chief (played by James Cagney) gives the order to
shoot. The order is followed and the protagonist is murdered.
