[comp.sys.apple] Homebrew HD

digitalfiend@vax1.acs.udel.EDU (Scott D Palmer) (07/29/89)

In my quest to construct a homebrew hard drive, I've come to the conclusion
that I'l use a Seagate ST277N-1 drive unit.
Now, does anyone have recomendations for what kind of case to get ?
I've heard that Tulin A-Hive cases are about the most popular, but I seem to
read messages from time to time about people upset with the "cheap" constructionof the case...mainly the power switch.....any comments from A-Hive owners ?

I have a Tulin A-Hive case.

I agree. The power switch is cheap. BUT that is not reason enough not to
consider buying it. My solution was simple. I went to Radio Shack and
bought a good power switch, drilled a hole in the front plate, and added it
myself. (I also added better LED's.) The point I'm making is, there are
other reasons for considering the case. It's well constructed. It has an
excellent power supply, (enough for two drives too). The case is made from
strong metal, (min. RF interference, etc.), which allows you to place the
drive close to your monitor, or any thing else, without concern. And it's
wired for a second drive.
I think you need to evaluate what you want it to do for you and what you
can do to make it that way. I think I have got a better case (now that I
fixed it up) than I would have gotten had I bought the "best" case out
there sold as is.

Okay, I (need and) can't find the A+ with the Homebrew HD article. I
believe that it was Dec. '88 (the only recent one I can't find). Is it ok to
photocopy (or FAX) pages of it now that it is discontinued?? If not, can
I get the back-issue? How? Where?

thanks in advance, (BTW: please post followups--don't mail them to me!)

I need to talk to someone who built their own HD with a GS.
I constructed one with a Seagate ST-296N drive and I'd like to discuss
interleave setting and other particulars. Any help will be greatly
appreciated.
                                 thanks,
                                        Scott Palmer
