Greetings! I wish to download some Ace-writer documents from an Apple II, to our Unix box. We support both Kermit and Xmodem. The owner of the Apple bought a Compuserve package that has a modem, and (I think) some software. Is there any way to use the included software to connect to our Unix box to do the download? This assumes, of course, that the software uses either protocol mentioned. So tell me: is it new software time, and if so, what should I buy? Much Thanks, Danny -- Daniel S. It's been awhile since someone asked me to translate and transfer Ace Writer files. I DO remember that (Franklin's) Ace Writer = Magic Window II (which someone on this net may yet use or remember). I don't remember whether the files are character oriented (caarriage returns only at the end of paragraphs) or line oriented (the latter, perhaps). There's a bunch of control characters and other stuff (formatting controls for printing I think) at the beginning of each file that'll need to be stripped away before the files will look "pretty." >Apple bought a Compuserve package that has a modem, and (I think) >some software. Is there any way to use the included software to Usually, the 'Compu$erve' credit is a promotional coupon that comes WITH the communications software. There are so many software vendors offering that promotion, that it's not possible to tell much about what you're dealing with. It's not at all unusual for software that comes with a modem (especially software for the II+) to offer nothing more sophisticated than character capture (and no upload feature at all). With luck, you'll have something that can do XModem (which means your host will get files without linefeeds and with the 8th bit set -- negative ASCII) but not Kermit. > So tell me: is it new software time, and if so, what should I buy? Life would be easier if you get Kermit for the Apple 2+ (public domain!! :-) If you can download, Kermit's available via ftp from cunixc.Columbia.Edu. It'd be easier to get a copy from the public domain library of any nearby user group.
