[comp.sys.apple] Fax question

rich@pro-exchange.cts.com (Rich Sims) (10/01/89)

This isn't strictly an "Apple" question, but I need some information and part
of it applies to my IIgs.

I am being dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 20th century, and now find
it necessary to purchase a fax device. I don't know whether to go with a
dedicated phone or a "fax modem". I'd appreciate hearing any comments by
anyone who's had any experience with these devices, especially as regards the
following points....

1. If I go with a fax modem, it will be used on an Apple IIgs, a Mac, and
<shudder> an IBM. Is there any software available for the IIgs that
directly supports such a modem, and (if so) with which file formats is it
    compatible?

2. I've also heard that some of the fax modems (or, more accurately, their
accompanying software) has some problems with the conversion of high
resolution images, and even text. Any comments on this area?

3. If I decide on a phone/fax, is there any machine available that can
function as a phone/fax/answering machine, with auto-detection capability
as far as incoming calls go. (Answer the call, switch to fax if
appropriate, otherwise, be an answering machine if I'm not there!)

4. As regards the fax modems, I notice that some are advertised as being
capable of 9600 bps transmission in fax mode, and a far slower rate (1200
and 2400 seem common) in a standard data-transmission mode. Are there any
that can handle higher data transmission speeds? (I'm kind of fond of my
    HST's speed!)

5. Any recommendations as to brand name/model would be appreciated,
especially if accompanied by a description of the capabilities.

I'm pretty sure not everyone is interested in this, so please respond via
e-mail. If there's any interest, I'll summarize to the net.

Thanks in advance...

Go with the dedicated machine. I see a very limited use for FAXmodems. The
dedicated machine is far cheaper to buy, doesn't any any more complexity to
your system. Be careful not to over buy. I bought a full featured Ricoh this
year and haven't used 90% of the features it has. I could have bought a
machine for 1/5th the price and had a perfectly useful FAX. That's also why
I'm using an Apple II instead of a Mac system......:-)
