It's finally happened. I've run out of memory. Currently, I have an Apple IIgs memory expansion card with 512k on board (makes 768k total) and I've had no luck finding the elusive 21256 memory chips to fill the other sockets. I've tried 41256's but I suspect there's a difference in CAS before RAS or vice versa. In any case, what I'd like to do is get a board that will be expandable for some time to come and use chips/SIMMS that will be more standard than the 21256's. I am considering an OctoRam, however, I don't know much about them. Also, there's the problem of what I do with the old card. The extractable 256k on there I could possibly sell to someone I know, however, this still leaves me with the card. As I have heard, reselling the card can be quite difficult. Another rumor, is that AE will give you $50 for your old card when you buy one of theirs... Anyways, the amount of memory I'm looking at the present is 1-2 Megs, with the ability to expand to 8 in the future. What cards are out there, how much do they cost, what chips do they use, can you get them with no ram installed so I could take advantage of lower chip prices in the Computer Shopper, and where'd I contact someone about these boards? (Gee, lookit that, a paragraph full of questions...) In advance, thanks for the information... -- [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] [] Jacob S. I have 1.25meg on a n apple card and am running into memory problems especially with AWGS. I just ordered an AE GS_RAM+ (2meg) from quality computers for $369. The cheapest around. It is expandable to 8meg (6meg on board and a two meg expander card). AE no longer provides the rebate for your old card. I talked to them yesterday. No what to do with the old card? Selling it will get you nothing. (realistically especially at $3.5 for 256K memory chips). My thought is that if I wanted to add another 1meg to the GS-ram+ it would cost me about $120+/-. For about the same amount, one can get a RAM keeper or memory saver which would allow you to used your old card, with your new card and also have memory backup. This is the route I will probably take when I save up some more money :-) Any advice/thought out there on this latter strategy? /chris ============================================================================= | Chris Shatara | Internet: shatara@memit.dec.com | | | shatara@memit.enet.dec.com | | Opinions expressed are | DEC Easynet: memit::shatara | | mine and mine only! | UUCP: ...!decwrl!memit!shatara | =============================================================================

Comment to message from: swrinde!cs.utexas.edu!uwm.edu!marque!studsys!buchho@ucsd.edu (buchho) Jacob, 1 meg chips are falling to VERY reasonable prices, $100 per meg or lower. Get a card that supports the 1meg chips such as the Applied Engineering GS RAM PLUS. Roger Coats (800/438-2883) is selling the GS RAM Plus with 1meg installed for $239. He also sells additional banks of 1meg chips for $100. It is directly expandable to 6 meg and with expansion card can go to 8 meg.
