Has anyone found a way to get PaintWorks Gold to run under GS/OS *consistenly*? I've heard several stories of people's woes with it (including mine). Sometime it will work, sometimes it won't. Any luck from the masses out there? --Rick Ewing Apple Atlanta Tech Weenies

After further experimentation (namely ripping out all my DAs), Paintworks GOLD finally loaded properly. I guess either the program is a huge memory hog, or it doesn't like the DAs I have, or both. The only way I guess I find out is if I lay my hands on a GS-RAM. Hello, Applied Engineering? BTW, I am running a 1.25 megabyte system, with 20 MB hard disk and two 3.5" floppies, just for reference. --Rick

RE: Paintworks Gold & GS/OS I don't think there is a way to get all features to run properly, although more memory than 1.25M would help. BUT, Activision is aware of the problems and their support person on ALPE (Applelink Personal Edition) says there will upgrades to support GS/OS for Paintworks Gold, Music Studio and DrawPlus. He said the upgrades *should* be ready in January and that they would notify registered owners. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jim Block jib@prism.TMC.COM {mit-eddie, pyramid, harvard!wjh12, xait, datacube}!mirror!prism!jib Matthew Bender Inc, 11 Penn Plaza, NY, NY 10001 (212) 216-8018

From article <8812190112.aa24785@SMOKE.BRL.MIL>, by REWING@TRINCC.BITNET: > After further experimentation (namely ripping out all my DAs), Paintworks GOLD > finally loaded properly. ... All of the Paintworks programs do not follow a particular standard for supporting NDA's. They don't start up the scrap manager. Why? Because a sample program that Apple distributed (with source, as an example of a program for the GS) didn't do it. We (StyleWare) discovered that after getting lots of calls from people with Paintworks. I've got an NDA that I wrote to patch the problem. All it does is look to see if the Scrap Manager is started up when it (the NDA) gets its init call. If not, then it does so, & shuts it back down when it's done. Note, though, that you still can't transfer data between your DA's (say, Scrapbook) and Paintworks. If anyone is interested, I'll post the NDA on comp.binaries.apple2. -- Scott Lindsey, wombat | UUCP: {ames, apple, portal, sun, voder}!claris!scott Product Development | Internet: scott@claris.com | AppleLink: LINDSEY1 Claris Corp. | These are not the opinions of Claris or anyone else.

I just got the purge-o-matic a few days ago, but I haven't downloaded it yet. I'll let you know if it helps any. To me, it just seems that Paintwor needs a revision badly. --Rick

Hi Grant, Actually, I've gotten Pthe menu clock to work *withwith* Paintworks, but that was at the expense of all my DAs. Hmmmm.... Oh well. Doo Doo Occurs. --Rick

Scott, After hearing that, I've come to the conclusion that as a programming effort, Paintowrks must suck raw ...well...this is a family bboard. I do hope Activision (or whatever the hell they call themselves this week) gets their ir act together on this one soon. BTW, AppleWorks GS is pretty nice. Except that we don't make any boards larger than 1 meg! This program is like trying to run Fullwrite on a one meg Mac SE. Oh well, I suppose Applied EngEngineering will get richer yet.... --Rick Ewing Apple Atlanta Tech Support

"Paintworks GOLD is a dream to use", according to my artist son, " as long as all 1.25 meg of memory is available." I have had Multiscribe GS hang up on me with 3 or 4 fonts and a graphic, with all 1.25 meg available. I hope Appleworks GS has this problem fixed. (Out of memory! [Ok] [Cancel] ).

Activision is offering an upgrade to version 1.5 for a very reasonable $5 I sort of got mine today (seems they shiped out a whole buch of orders with 2 art disks and no program guess what I got). Anyway their is an 800 number accessable from Canada and the US (gee I can't beleive they want to support us CANADIANS) her it is. Have your registration number availble if you have it and YOU credit card. 800 - 227 - 6900
