[comp.sys.apple] GS/OS, Apple, Hard Drives, etc..

gt0t+@ANDREW.CMU.EDU (Gregory Ross Thompson) (10/16/89)

I have had this problem for quite some time, and have posted here
about it, as well as every other place I could find. I will post it
once again.

I have an olc CMC "Quick 20" hard drive. I bought it used a while
ago. It works great under ProDOS 8, and ProDOS 16, but under GS/OS,
it doesn't work at all. Since there is no driver for it, GS/OS
crashes when it polls the drive, leaving it in read mode. This is the
biggest pain in the butt I've ever had. I've got a GS, 1.25 megs of
RAM, 1 3.5", 1 5.25", IW2, modem, and the drive. I've tried every
possible combination of drivers for GS/OS, and it just doesn't work.
I assume that I simply need a drive that will treat the CMC like a
standard ProDOS device.

I have called CMS (they bought CMC), and talked to their Apple //
tech people, and they said I was out of luck, and needed to buy new
drive. In fact, it sounded like they had no idea what a CMC was, so I
didn't really expect much.

If anyone out there has a CMC, I'd like some kind of tech specs for
it, if there are any. I'd also like the format for GS/OS's drivers
(are they on the Apple FTP?) then maybe I could write my own, although
I kinda doubt it.

I need help on this. You can't imagine how much of a pain it is to
use the incredibly slow System 3.2 all the time, and not being able to
use ANY of the GS/OS specific programs. I have to lock out the hard
drive from the control panel to boot up System 5.0.

If anyone thinks they can write the driver for it, please let me
know. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know. All of you with
Apple connections, please see what you can do.

  Please, people, I need help.

          -Greg T.
