[comp.sys.apple] Earthquake

SEWALL@UCONNVM.BITNET (Murph Sewall) (10/19/89)

I haven't seen any mention of how our friends at Apple and Claris fared
during Tuesday's shake. I trust everyone's okay. I've received some
LINKFAIL messages from Berkeley, so I know many links, but not all, remain
down (typically for lack of elecricity rather than structural damage).

An interesting side note. The computer center at Berkeley lost all their
high speed lines due to a "break in a telephone cable" about an hour before
the quake (leaving me to wonder if some unnoticed pre-shock was the cause -
probably the problem with the cable was unrelated to subsequent events).

We're still here...word is that no Apple employees were seriously injured in
the quake, but a few of the buildings aren't in great shape. My group
(Developer Technical Support) is in a very new (8-story!) building that
suffered only superficial damage, and we'll be back up to speed very quickly,
except where we need to consult with folks who are "refugees" of their
buildings.

Most of Cupertino was without power at least a while, but apparently it was
all restored within less than one day. Water, food, and phones have not been
a problem in Cupertino, as far as I know. (Safeway did sell out on flashlights
and D batteries, but they *were* open on Wednesday, to our amazement.)

Not all areas are as well off as Cupertino, of course--I believe much of
Santa Cruz and San Francisco is still without power, and they're expecting
rain this weekend.

By the way, we continue to feel small (?) aftershocks--definitely a couple
per day, and perhaps lots more (it's hard to tell if you're just being
paranoid, or if there really are lots of small ones).

(Tuesday's quake was, no doubt, in celebration of my 6-month anniversary
at Apple.)

Not too much structural damage here. The building are either well made or
have been reinforced recently (with the possibly exception of Moffit Undergrad
library, which is due for reinforcement... or should I say overdue?)

I *live* in an 8-story building... I wish I'd been in it when the quake hit;
that would have been interesting.

Probably a combination of both. I keep feeling things too, even when the
glass of water in front of me is totally still... :-)

That is wonderful news that our favorite computer company surived the quake.
Someone was watching over Apple..
