Greetings. I have a couple questions about Apple IIgs-format fonts. 1. Does the IIgs support "true" italic and bold versions of fonts? Times italic, for example, looks much different on the laserwriter than it does on the screen when you italicize the plain Times font. 2. Is there a way to convert Mac-format fonts to the IIgs? I have access to several screen fonts in Macintosh format and would like to use them on my IIgs. Is there a utility which performs this conversion? Perhaps some tweaking I could perform on my own? 3. Can I access other fonts on the laserwriter besides Times and Helvetica? I want to try using Bookman and Zapf Dingbats. Also, I'm curious about being able to convert files in Macintosh PICT format (object oriented, not pixel-oriented) to the Apple IIgs. Isn't there also a PICT format on the IIgs? How compatible are the two? Thanks in advance for your help! Bill Marriott Lou@cup.portal.com

However, this still means you have to have the styled variation on the disk or the Font Manager can't know about it. If you actually have Times Italic in your *:System:Fonts directory, when a program asks for Times Italic, the Font Manager will go load it and use it. If you don't, it will italicize the closest version of Times it can find. (BTW, some programs use the QuickDraw call SetTextFace for styled fonts. A program doing this doesn't give the Font Manager a chance to load the good font from disk, and so a created font will always be used. Not too many programs do this, but some modules of AppleWorks GS used to, at least.) >3. Can I access other fonts on the laserwriter besides Times and > Helvetica? Network Comment: to #1479 by portal!cup.portal.com!Lou@uunet.uu.net Mac fonts can and can't be used on the GS :-( . There is currently a program on the Mac which mungs around with a font, then can be transfered to a GS and processed again there to get into a format to be usable. A much better avenue to go is to contact one of the font archives (A2-Central, Genie, Compuserve, TechAlliance, etc.) and get a list of the fonts that they currently have. Folks have been translating fonts for quite some time now - perhaps the fonts that you want are already converted. -- Larry W.
