Dave, I have just received system disk 5.0.2 at the office and have some difficulty installing it on my IIGS. I have a 512k system with 2 Apple 5.25 in. drives, an Apple 3.5 in. drive, an Apple UniDisk 3.5 in., an IBM(aargh) Proprinter and an Apple 20sc Hard drive. When I attempt to install the SCSI driver and manager on my copy of the system disk, then reboot, Everything will load as normal, then I get the message at the end of the boot sequence No room to run Finder Error=$0004. I reboot with system disk 4.0, go into the control panel, look at RAM disk, and the total of both available and in use memory add up to 511K. I only have 2 DA's active under System Disk 4.0 (Digital Black [a menubar clock] and Control Panel DA. When I reactivate Floyd Zink's Memory DA, reboot System Disk 4.0 and run Memory DA, it correctly reports that I have 512k of memory, but in-use memory and available memory only add up to 511K. I do not have any caches active. Other programmers I talked to in the office think that it is a rounding error, however, I had this problem under System disk 5.0. I can NOT add additional memory at this time due to department budget constraints (my department's budget is shot all to you-know-where right now). Do you, or anyone in AIIDTS, or on the Internet have ANY ideas? Randy Miller rs.miller@pro-harvest crash!pro-harvest!rs.miller obsolete!pro-harvest!rs.miller rs.miller@pro-harvest.cts.com

I have a good fix... Spend your own money, probably less than 70.00 depending on where you get the memory. If you are going to use it, then it may just be worth it. Of course, you could always use 4.0 and toss the 5.0x disks out. I think the former option would be the best. You could even put it on plastic and pay $10.00 a month for a full year. Now, wouldn't that be worth 5.0x? Or, you could tell your dept to go to h_ll, and tell them you will not work with a stone age memory-less machine. Maybe that would help? scott hutinger mmpr004@ecncdc.bitnet

System 5.0 is *very* tight for memory space in the Finder...there's not a lot you can do other than remove CDAs and NDAs, remove any drivers you don't need, and [if you have no other choice] sacrifice a fair amount of loading speed by removing ExpressLoad from your System folder, to gain back a little RAM. The 511K is just rounding. --Dave Lyons dlyons@apple.com

Comment to message from: MMPR004@ECNCDC.BITNET (Scott Hutinger) Scott, First off, I don't have the cash on hand to purchase the memory (especially when you rely on insulin injections in order to live). Second, I don't have ANY plastic money (nor do I want it, especially with the debt burden over my head right now). Finally, my supervisor knows all about the problem, and to tell them to f*** off means a real quick trip to the unemployment office. The only thing I'm saying is that if Apple states in their technical specs that their hare-brained OS works with a minimum of 512K, I EXPECT TO DO AS SUCH! Randy Miller rs.miller@pro-harvest

Oh my. I suppose you'd prefer to "PS/2 it!" with the Presentattion Manager in only 2.5 Mbytes (snicker). IBM claims that's all the memory it needs -- and the claim is true provided you don't want to run any applications. Do you, or anyone in AIIDTS, or on the Internet have ANY ideas? Randy, memory prices have plummeted to around $35 per bank of 256k chips. You could bring your 512k machine up to 1.2MB for approximately $100. Surely either you or your department can afford that. If not stick with System Disk 4.0 and don't complain. Time has passed a 512k system by and there isn't much else to do besides dig into your pocket. If you insist on trying, eliminate all CDA's and NDA's, they take up memory. The "missing" 1k of memory is probably the screen memory which isn't free memory, but is allocated. Sam UUCP: crash!pro-europa!samt ARPA: crash!pro-europa!samt@nosc.mil INET: samt@pro-europa.cts.com
