[comp.sys.apple] Postscript File

dhom@cosmos.acs.calpoly.edu (David Hom) (11/12/89)

I frequently create a document and print it as a postscript file, convert it
to **AHEM** Mac format, and print it on a LaserWriter NTX. Many times, the
font name in the postscript file created on my GS does not correspond to the
name of the postscript font in the printer. For example, the GS writes
AvantGarde-Italic when the NTX font is AvantGarde-DemiOblique. To fix this,
I edit the text before downloading it to the printer.

My question? Does the LaserWriter driver or the font file determine the name
of a font for postscript output? Can you edit this other than physically
editing the output file?

I have a IIgs and am using the LaserWriter Driver supplied with System 5.0.2.

Thanks

Dave

The Macintosh has this complicated resource known as a FOND that keeps
together the suffixes necessary for PostScript name translation. For example,
it might have what we call "italics" listed as suffix #2, and in the Times FOND
suffix #2 would be "Italic", but in AvantGarde it would be "DemiOblique".

The IIgs does not have this way of linking lots of font families together
(we've just had resources for a few months, even), but the LaserWriter driver
does it's best to guess what it should be. As you've seen, it guesses "Italic"
for AvantGarde, which isn't right.

The whole story is documented in a Tech Note (again, on the FTP site - PLEASE
don't send me mail asking how to get to it because I don't know) with a number
around IIgs #67 or #68 - "LaserWriter Font Mapping".
